Cosplay?!

these are my opinions, i do not mean to offend anyone. Just stating my thoughts.

Setting the recent themes i just posted a few months back aside, i am stuck here staring at my facebook wall with people preparing for an upcoming cosplay event.

What comes to mind:
1. My facebook wall is flooded with anime pictures and i-want-to-cosplay-him/her pictures. And sadly this have become a headache for me.

2. All the people in my facebook account are talking about "cosplay, cosplay, cosplay" that i fear that they have totally drawn their lives to cosplay that they forgot to live outside the fantasy world.

3. About 75% (most of the time) when i log in to my facebook account is always about "xxxx have commented on a photo of you"

4. Sadly, some people tend to make photo comments into some convenient, nonconstructive chat. We have facebook chat for that.

Of course, i could be wrong. But if you disagree, make your own blog.

Also... i think cosplay is about making your own clothes. Doesnt it all defeat the purpose? If we were supposedly let some tailor do the work for us, there is no sense of accomplishment. Well, thats my opinion.

AND LASTLY, ever came across the "we cosplay to express, not to IMPRESS"? fan page in facebook?
Dont you think the cosplayers they put in their album pictures wanted to impress (more than they want to express)? Just a thought.

p.s.
Im not really a great cosplayer either :))

  1. i would like to comment about this: "i think cosplay is about making your own clothes. Doesnt it all defeat the purpose? If we were supposedly let some tailor do the work for us, there is no sense of accomplishment."

true enough, 'real' cosplay is about making your own costume. however, i find that there's also a sense of accomplishment when you let others make the costume for you. in my case, i don't let the tailor do ALL the work. most tailors in our city aren't that skilled and they get this "wtf" reaction whenever i try to show them a complicated design. when that happens (which is most of the time), i make recommendations and solutions to make it easier for them (contraty to what others believe that you just show the design to them and that's it).

if i just had the time and skill (and the machine), i would choose to sew my own costume. just my two cents since i (painstakingly) go to a tailor after all that planning on what to cosplay and whatnot.^^

  3. and i would just like to add:

after seeing the anime Genshiken (a series about a group of otakus in college), it seems that that 'rule' regarding cosplay is kinda overrated. one main character in the anime is a cosplayer, but she doesn't make her own costumes. her passion for cosplaying is clearly seen, yet the thought that she didn't make her own clothes didn't hinder her from enjoying what she does. ^^

  4. and another add: (LOL)

buying pre-made costumes online and stores does seem a bit unfair. it takes out the excitement of cosplaying, making you look like just a mascot. i wouldn't be caught dead buying something out of a store and walk among cosplayers proudly as if i made them. (i think your points coincides with these thoughts of mine. ^_^)

  5. ^ yes, I agree..I think cosplaying is simply the fulfillment of being able to "become" and be immersed in the spirit of your favorite character..creating your own clothes and props is only part of the cosplay experience...Remember when we were just kids and we would "role play" I think that's how cosplaying should be..simply for the fun even if we look stupid to the eyes of our parents... I really can't see cosplaying as an act of expression but simply as having fun of it and I think that you can't really justify the fact that you're simply "expressing" or trying to "impress" but you leave that part for other people to decide..

I agree with the facebook part though..I think people should take it easy when "tagging" people..hahaha..
